Indisk-brittiska författaren Salman Rushdie är kanske mest känd för romanen Satansverserna, som ställde till med ett djävla liv i den muslimska världen och gjorde hans egna liv till ett helvete. Med otaliga dödshot och en fatwa från Iran hängandes över sig gick den gode herrn under jorden i många år – och fastnade totalt för Super Mario World.
I hans memoarer berättas att den prisbelönta författaren introducerades för spelet av sonen Zafar. Ett utdrag från boken följer nedan:
Marianne came around and scolded him for playing video games. Thanks to Zafar, he had grown fond of Mario the plumber and his brother Luigi and sometimes Super Mario World felt like a happy alternative to the one he lived in the rest of the time. 'Read a good book,' his wife told him scornfully. 'Give it up.' He lost his temper. 'Don't tell me how to live my life,' he exploded, and she made a grand exit."
A few days later...
Alone at Hermitage Lane he reached the end of his Super Mario game, defeating the big bad Bowser himself and rescuing the insufferably pink Princess Toadstool. He was glad Marianne was not there to witness his triumph.
Under tiden han gömde sig skrev Salman Rushdie bland annat barnboken "Luka and the Fire of Life", som sägs ha varit väldigt inspirerad av Super Mario och hans värld. I boken kallas huvudpersonen "Super-Luka" och han har 999 liv.
Sedan tidigare har Salman Rushdie också sagt att han "tror bästa sättet att befria Iran är att helt enkelt släppa ner Nintendo-konsoler från luften". Booker Prize-vinnaren tycks ha ett gott öga till allas vår lönnfeta italienska rörmokare.
