How to use the console

[Ctrl] + [Alt] + [~] Opens the console
Once the console is open, type in a command. Some only work within an active game. If you press tab the console will attempt to complete the command you have started to write, if more than one command can match, they will be listed instead.

To avoid having to press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [~] you can add a command line shortcut to Quake 4 like this:

Example: "C: \my games\Quake4\quake4.exe" +set com_allowConsole 1

You can also add the line "set com_allowConsole 1" to your autoexec.cfg file.

.config files

To run a list of commands automatically when Quake 4 boots up, you can create a regular text file in the folder "\base" under your Quake IV directory and name it autoexec.cfg.
Example: "C: \quake4\base\autoexec.cfg"
In here, you can set any variable and execute any command and it will be run when you start Quake 4.

Other tweaks

To get rid of the intro movie every time you start the game add this to the command line +disconnect to the Quake 4 shortcut, like this "quake4.exe +disconnect"

A list of useful console commands

General
bind - binds commands to key
map [mapname] - Opens a map
quit - Exits
recordNetDemo [name]- start recording a network demo. Automatically compresses the demo & sychronizes your client with the server, you don't have to do g_synchronousClients 1 like you did with Q3A.
stopNetDemo - stop recording demo, demos are saved in your "quake 4\q4base\demos directory"
_impulse0 - Switch weapons to gauntlet
_impulse1 - MachineGun
_impulse2 - ShotGun
_impulse3 - Hyperblaster
_impulse4 - GranadeLauncher
_impulse5 - Nailgun

r_displayrefresh "85" eller det Hz-antal man har

Graphics
r_gamma - Change the bringtness of the screen, default "1"
g_fov - Changes the players field of view, default "90"
g_crosshairsize - Change size of your crosshair
g_crosshaircolor "0 1 1 1" - Color of crosshair, 0 1 1 1 = Alpha Red Green Blue, values go from 0.0 to 1.0.
screenshot - Records a screenshot and places it in the screenshot directory
com_drawfps - Draw FPS counter

net_clientlagometer "1"- Display a visual graph of your connection to the server
cl_punkbuster "1" - Enable punkbuster anti-cheat software, if punkbuster is disabled, you will not be able to join servers that have it enabled.
