"When we released Rise of Nations in the spring of 2003, we were extremely happy with the game's reception. Big Huge Games received a great deal of praise from players for the innovations RoN brought to the real-time strategy genre, and naturally we started thinking about what we wanted to do next. The "safe bet," and certainly the expectation from many in our community, would have been to return to the familiar subject of history. However, we found ourselves excited by the idea of abandoning some of the constraints of human history, and striking out into new, more fantastical subject matter."
